Building and maintaining your own website - for farmers, smallholders and other small businesses

Who would benefit from this course? If you sell your own produce direct, have holiday cottages or B&B's to advertise, or just want to put your farm, smallholding or small business on the Internet map, a website is an absolute must-have. This course will teach you how to create and maintain your own website without the need for an expensive web designer or learning complicated programming languages. The tools that you'll be using are the ones we used to build this website.
Course content: In a single day you will:
- Become familiar with a simple set of website-building tools
- Design the structure and content of your own site
- Build a variety of web pages including text, pictures, links to other sites etc
- See how the results would look on the Internet
- Understand the services offered by ‘hosting companies’ and how to select a package which suits your needs.
Following the course you will have all the skills and experience you need to build a website, and will understand how to arrange web hosting and register your website domain name.
The course covers:
- Learning how to use a well-known set of online web-building tools.
- Building different types of pages and a menu system; select the ‘look and feel’ of your site, format text , insert pictures, build links between pages and to external sites.
- Managing images: which format to use, changing the size of images, getting the best speed.
- Website addresses and domain names: how do I register ‘mysmallholding.co.uk’ and how do other people find it ?
- Design and create your site outline, decide what information you want to share, what pages do you need, how will they link.
- Design and build your key pages
This course is limited to four people and runs from 10am to 4:30 pm. Feel free to bring a laptop if you have one (if not, we’ll provide a PC); it must run Windows XP or Vista and be wireless-enabled or have an Ethernet connection. Do bring any digital images or other materials you’d like to use, on a USB stick or CD/DVD.
Cost: £75 per person including a light lunch and Devon cream tea.
Prerequisites: No experience in programming is required, but basic familiarity with a PC (how to use a mouse and keyboard, accessing the Internet, sending emails) is advisable. Please contact us to discuss if you have any queries.

Booking: Booking is simple. Just send us your name, address, phone number and email address indicating which course you want to book with your preferred date, and we’ll send you an invoice (payment is required in advance), directions to the farm and any other information you might need. And don’t forget to tell us if you have any dietary restrictions.
